Granville Cutler - Luscomb Gem Album
Inscribed on album page: Granville / Cutler and mother Gem tintype. From the Luscomb Gem Album. I found a Granville Cutler in the 1870 census of Andover, Massachuttes. At the time of that census he was four years old, he looks about two in this picture, which would date this picture to approx. 1868. Because this name is somewhat unique he was easier to find than many of the other names in this album. Interestingly there was also a Trow and Abbott on that page of the census, which makes me think this album must have been from the Andover area! This is the perfect example of how easy it can be to mistake a male child for a female. His obviously masculine name makes it clear that he is a boy. If we weren't supplied with a name a big clue would be his hairstyle. Female children typically had their hair parted down the middle.
