Revenue Stamps
From September 1, 1864, to August 1, 1866, taxes were imposed on photographs, as well as other forms of artwork, in order to help pay for the war. These stamps can be incredibly useful in dating photographs.

VERSO: Portrait of an Unknown Man (Tintype) - Bates Album
Two revenue stamps on verso. A 1-cent Proprietary and a 2-cent Bank Check. Both have been hand canceled. 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches Tintype from page 39 of the Bates Album. His watch chain has been accented with gold paint.
